Utah 3- Hole in Rock, north shore Lake Powell
View down "Hole in the Rock"
Mormons blasted this path down to what was then the Colorado river
and took 80 wagons with whole families across the river to make a missionary settlement on the
other side of the Colorado. It took them 2 weeks of blasting to cut the wagon track.
In lowering the wagons, it took ten men to hold each wagon back with ropes .
Amazingly all the wagons made it, and there was no injury or loss of life
And yes, it really is this steep !
Grafitti from 1896 about 16 years after the original cut was made
Long view across Lake Powell from above "Hole in the Rock"
the horizon is over 20 miles away.
